Protect your business data, email communications, IT applications and operating systems from any disaster with OGL Offsite Recovery.

"90% of businesses which suffer a data loss as a result of a disaster are forced to close within two years of the disaster." London Chamber of Commerce

Data is the lifeblood of your business. The inability to access your data, including client or project details, emails, customer orders, stock levels and invoicing, for any significant amount of time, would be catastrophic to most businesses; the total loss of this data would almost certainly be fatal.

To combat the issue, to protect your business from any disaster and to ensure it remains fully operational, OGL has now launched Offsite Recovery, our Offsite Backup & Disaster Recovery Solution.

What is OGL Offsite Recovery?

The OGL Offsite Recovery solution is a managed service which automatically protects all of your mission-critical data, IT applications and operating systems, by replicating it to our maximum security offsite storage location. Every night, your data, IT applications and their configurations undergo an automatic backup across your existing internet connection to OGL's secure data vault. In the event of a disaster - a fire, flood or theft, for example - key workers would still be able to access your company data, IT applications and email as normal, from any broadband internet connection to our Data Centre.

  • Keep insurance premiums in check and maintain complete adherence to Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity industry regulations.
  • Provide stronger guarantees to your clients as a result of the operational advantages provided by OGL's high-security Offsite Recovery solution.

How does the OGL Offsite Recovery solution work?

1. An OGL Backup Appliance, loaded with OGL Offsite Recovery's backup software, is installed at the customer's site or office premises and connected to the customer's Local Area Network (LAN).

2. A full backup of the customer's servers, including all data, IT applications and operating systems, plus email accounts, is taken and stored on the OGL Backup Appliance.

3. The full backup is also temporarily stored on a USB Hard Drive, which is securely transported to the maximum-security Tier IV Data Centre. The data is then transferred in a highly secure encrypted format from the USB Hard Drive into the Storage Area Network server (SAN) with over 30 Terabytes (also known as TB - one terabyte = 1,000 gigabytes!) of raw storage capacity, the SAN has ample redundancy to host mission-critical operating systems and applications.

4. Every night, an incremental backup (a backup of all saved changes) of mission-critical data, IT applications and operating systems, plus email accounts, is made to the OGL Backup Appliance, which is installed at the customer's site/office premises.

5. This incremental backup is also transferred to the maximum-security Tier IV Data Centre via highly secure internet connection on a nightly basis. Thanks to the state-of-the-art software used with the OGL Offsite Recovery solution, the data is compressed and deduplicated, meaning that only a narrow internet bandwidth is required in order to achieve the backup data transfer, plus storage costs are less as a result of the compression.

6. The nightly incremental backup at the maximum security Data Centre is added to the original server image backup (see step 3), to provide a complete and up-to-date backup of all mission-critical data, IT applications and operating systems, plus email accounts. This backup is also replicated to a further SAN at the Data Centre, providing a second backup. The SANs also archive backups for up to 10 days, should you need to revert to historical copies of your backup. The third backup is located on the OGL Backup Appliance, installed at the customer's site or office premises, and this archives backups for up to 10 days (subject to disk capacity).

OGL Offsite Recovery: in the event of a disaster

Depending on the extent and seriousness of the disaster, OGL Offsite Recovery will perform the following:

Local server failure: If a local server has had a major failure or suffered data loss, a copy of the server configuration, complete with all mission-critical data will be available on the local OGL Backup Appliance located at the customer's office or premises, which will enable a rapid return to service of approximately half a day or less. Normally in this event, without the advantage of the OGL Offsite Recovery solution, a complete re-load of server operating system, applications, policy configurations and user details would need to be performed before you could begin to restore your data: this process could take up to two days, with a corresponding amount of downtime.

Major disaster: In the event of a major disaster at your premises, such as a fire, flood or theft, OGL Offsite Recovery users can access all mission-critical data, IT applications and their operating systems, plus all email accounts, remotely via a highly-secure SSL VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection from any broadband-connected location within a maximum period of 24 hours, or less dependent on the quantity of data you have stored. If new server equipment is required to replace existing damaged equipment, complete images of your servers would be available at OGL's Data Centre for rapid re-load.

OGL Offsite Recovery: additional features and business benefits

  • OGL Offsite Recovery removes the need for tapes or the resources required for a daily, manual backup process.
