How does the OGL Offsite Recovery solution work?

OGL Offsite Recovery protects your data through the following steps:

OGL Offsite Recovery Backup Appliance Install

  • An OGL Backup Appliance, loaded with OGL Offsite Recovery’s Asigra backup software, is installed at the customer’s site or office premises and connected to the customer’s Local Area Network (LAN).
  • A full backup of the customer’s servers, including all data, IT applications and operating systems, plus email accounts, is then taken and stored on the OGL Backup Appliance.
  • Server specific customised backup sets are created using the latest backup technologies.

Data transferred to Tier IV Data Centre

  • A full, master backup is temporarily stored on a USB Hard Drive, which is then securely transported to the maximum-security Tier IV Data Centre.
  • The data is then transferred from the USB Hard Drive into the Storage Area Network (SAN) with over 30 Terabytes (also known as TB - one terabyte = 1,000 gigabytes!) of raw storage capacity. The SAN has ample redundancy to host mission-critical operating systems and applications.

Automated Nightly Backup

  • Every night, the OGL Backup Appliance will perform an incremental backup (a backup of all saved changes) of mission-critical data including IT applications, operating systems and email accounts. An encrypted copy of this data will be stored on the local on-site Appliance.
  • This encrypted incremental backup is also transferred on a nightly basis to the SAN, hosted at the maximum-security Tier IV Data Centre, via highly secure internet connection. Thanks to the state-of-the-art Asigra software used with the OGL Offsite Recovery solution, the data is compressed and de-duplicated, meaning that only a narrow internet bandwidth is required in order to achieve the backup data transfer.

Complete data backup and archive

  • The nightly incremental backup at the maximum security Data Centre is added to the original server image backup to provide a complete and up-to-date backup of mission-critical data including IT applications, operating systems and email accounts. This backup is also replicated to an additional SAN at the Data Centre, which provides a thirddata backupin total, combined with the OGL Backup Appliance, which is stored on-site, and the backup stored at the Data Centre’s original SAN.
  • Should you need to revert to historical copies of your backup, archives are retained for up to 30 days both at the Data Centre and on the OGL Backup Appliance, stored at the customer’s premises.

OGL Offsite Recovery: in the event of a disaster

  • In the event of a major disaster at your premises, such as a fire, flood or theft, OGL Offsite Recovery users can access all mission-critical data including IT applications, operating systems and email accounts remotely via a highly-secure SSL VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection from any broadband-connected location within a maximum period of 24 hours, or less dependent on the quantity of data stored.
  • If new server equipment is required to replace existing damaged equipment, complete images of your servers would be available at OGL’s Data Centre for rapid re-load.

  • Datacentre Pod
  • Datacentre Servers

In the event of a local server failure

  • If a local server has had a major failure or suffered data loss, a copy of the server configuration, complete with all mission-critical data will be available on the local OGL Backup Appliance located at the customer’s premises, which will enable a rapid return to service of approximately half a day or less dependent on data volumes.
  • Normally in this event, without the advantage of the OGL Offsite Recovery solution, a complete re-load of server operating system, applications, policy configurations and user details would need to be performed before you could begin to restore your data: this process could take up to two days, with a corresponding amount of downtime.

OGL Offsite Recovery: additional features and business benefits

  • OGL Offsite Recovery removes the need for tapes or the resources required for a daily, manual backup process.
  • Faster recovery from a single server failure as a result of the on-site OGL Backup Appliance.
  • Fully automated backup process which performs backups at weekends and public holidays too, without the need to change tapes / external hard drives.
  • Highly secure data encryption between both the OGL Data Centre and the on-site OGL Backup Appliance.
  • Backup for both Windows and Linux servers and the solution is MS Exchange and SQL aware.
  • Adhering to Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Best Practice, OGL provides a regular rehearsal of the solution.
  • Provision of reports confirming the validity of the OGL Offsite Recovery backup.
