Can you tell us about your job role?
WebServices mainly deals with the creation of eCommerce solutions enabling customers to sell online via our eShop product and across multiple shopping channels such as eBay and Amazon. As a Senior Developer, it is my job to support the rest of the team in doing that, as well as heading up development projects. This year, I have been working on creating in-house tools and processes to streamline the actual deployment and maintenance of the hundreds of websites we handle, as well as working on the core of the next generation of OGL's eCommerce offerings.
What is your average day like?
Varied; depending on what stage the project is at I can spend my day coding, testing, researching, planning, helping out other members of the team or in the occasional meeting. At the end of each day I have a short meeting with the rest of the project team to update the project progress, resolve any issues that have arisen, and discuss what will be worked on the following day.
What is your career background?
I've worked most of my career as a freelancer and contractor, mostly for marketing companies in the UK and abroad. I've been able to work on a great variety of software projects over the years (including one for a brewery where I was part-paid in beer) both online and offline, and I've worked for a fair few interesting characters as well. More recently I've worked on a permanent basis for a major national news corporation, and for a local website agency.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the overall challenge, but also having three big screens to code on.
How do you like to spend your time away from the office?
I have a campervan, so I generally try to get out with the family over the weekend. I'm trying to teach my son to fish at the moment (his idea, I haven't fished for over 20 years) so we'll quite often head out somewhere with a picnic and a pond. We've not actually caught anything yet, but I'm not sure that matters.
